Improving Health and Medical Care
NSBRI researchers are working to enable astronauts to perform at their peak physical and mental capacities in order to meet the high demands of their jobs. Strategies to improve their overall health, performance and well-being can also be applied to enhancing the lives of those living on Earth. NSBRI-supported technologies developed to monitor and care for humans working in the austere environment of space lend themselves well to remote medical and behavioral health care in hospitals, rural clinics, ambulances, battlefields or extreme environments. Therapeutic interventions developed for long-duration astronauts can also improve the lives of individuals who suffer from analogous conditions, such as muscle wasting, osteoporosis, balance disorders, sleep disturbances and cardiovascular disease.
Safeguarding the Environment
NSBRI-funded research on the effects of radiation and the detection of environmental hazards has the potential to impact how medical radiation exposures and other significant threats are handled.
Fostering Commercial and Economic Growth
The combination of NSBRI research expenditures, and subsequent revenues and business activities resulting from the commercialization of its funded technologies, will promote new ventures, create jobs, increase the tax base and stimulate economic growth over the long term. Companies engaged with NSBRI enhance internal R&D efforts by gaining access to seed-stage licensing prospects, funding and collaboration opportunities.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Space exploration captures the imagination and inspires the next generation to excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Industry Forum members enrich NSBRI's educational programs by conveying their private sector experiences and business acumen to trainees through teaching, lecturing and mentoring activities.
Fueling Scientific and Technological Advances
Successful integration of government-sponsored and private sector research yields superior advancements that not only accelerate the maturation of products for the nation's space program, but also sustain America's pre-eminence globally in science, technology, medicine and emerging disciplines. |
