Cardiovascular Alterations

About the Research Positive Impact on our Earth

  • Patients experiencing cardiovascular deconditioning due to reduced mobility resulting from an illness, injury or aging will benefit from the exercise, nutritional, and pharmacological solutions developed for astronauts.

  • Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. Early screening methods for predisposition to heart disease are critical so that therapeutic interventions can be applied in a preventative manner. NSBRI research on the fundamental mechanisms causing vascular degeneration and atherosclerosis in astronauts and the development of early detection techniques for underlying disease pathology will benefit those on Earth as well.
