Radiation Effects

About the Research Positive Impact on our Earth

The Radiation Effects Team is determining the risks and harmful effects of exposure to various types of space radiation. The team is focusing on the acute effects that astronauts may experience after exposure to the intense intermittent radiation emitted by the sun during solar particle events (SPE).

The team is addressing:

  • The radiation exposure associated with and countermeasures to mitigate the effects of radiation induced by an acute exposure to SPE
  • Portable continuous radiation detectors that can be worn on spacesuits during space-walk activities
  • Degenerative tissue changes that can occur long after exposure to radiation
